A Forever Home for Aneesha
It was a mammoth task… but we’ve finally done it. Aneesha has been rescued!
Aneesha is a 46-year-young lady who has moved into WRRC’s new Elephant Care Facility (ECF) in Karnataka. Here, she will get the treatment, feed and care that she has been deprived of all her life. A few months ago, Tree Foundation India contacted WRRC about Aneesha, whom they felt was in urgent need of help. Our team agreed to take on the responsibility. We visited Aneesha in the small town in interior Tamil Nadu, where she lived, in isolation and neglect. She was emaciated, arthritic, and in desperate need of veterinary attention. Her guardian, though kind-hearted, expressed his inability to maintain her and treat her affliction; and wisely agreed to hand her over to us. We submitted our report on her condition to the State Forest Departments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and pleaded for her transfer to WRRC on compassionate grounds.
Over the next few months, the kindness and sincerity of many people made her rescue a reality. Private individuals came forward to offer land for her; and the forest departments, after some initial delays, gave their permission for her transfer. And most importantly, her new neighbours accepted her presence amongst them with an open heart.
